Breast Milk Sharing

What is breast milk sharing?

It is the simple act of sharing breastmilk with other moms. Mom's pump their breastmilk and give or sell it to other moms to give to their babies instead of formula.

Is that gross? Let me ask you this? Is receiving donated blood gross? You answer the question. If receiving any body fluid is ok, then all should be ok. WHEN screened.

I would never use someones breastmilk for my child without first making sure the mom is free of drugs and disease. But once this is confirmed, I would not hesitate. In my opinion human milk is best for human babies, ( with the exception of true allergy, which occurs in a very small percentage of babies.

In decades past, lactating women would be summoned to nurse the babies of "high society" mothers who could not be bothered with nursing their young. Or even nurse babies of moms who had died or who were unable to nurse. This was not yucky then, it was necessary for survival in many cases.

In recent days, there has been an uprising of using donor breast milk. A group started on facebook called Eats on Feets (recently changed name to Human Milk 4 Human Babies) went VIRAL on Facebook with their task to get human milk to as many babies as possible. Mom's all over the world are donating and receiving milk. Lives are being changed by this, no doubt there.

There are guidelines for sharing breastmilk. Contact your local Human Milk 4 Human Babies chapter via facebook to read the guidelines.

Another option is donating your breastmilk to a milk bank. This milk is usually used for sick babies in neonatal intensive care units:Breastmilk for sale? Not going to happen anytime soon.
