Used Breastpumps

I wish I had a nickle for every time I hear: "What about buying used breastpumps?" or borrowing one, yada yada.

Most personal use breastpumps are just that personal use. This means the manufacturer and the CDC only approves them for ONE user. Think about it, if they are not approved for multi users it means both the center for disease control and the manufacturer cannot guarantee that disease or pathogens could not pass from user to user. Yuck.

Take for example Medela, the largest manufacturer of pumps in the US, NONE of their retail pumps are approved for multi users. Nope, not the pump in style. Meaning they cannot guarantee illness/disease will not pass from user to user. You are basically taking a risk by purchasing any of these pumps used.

What are the brands that are not approved for multiple users? Ameda, Medela, Lansinoh, Evenflo, Playtex, Whisperwear and Avent.

I am frequently asked this question: "But what if I buy my own "kit"?" meaning new tubing/flanges/bottles.Still NO, the machine part of the pump cannot be cleaned so there is a possibility of cross contamination.

Both Medela and Ameda do have HOSPITAL GRADE breastpumps that are approved for multi-users, these pumps are available for rental or purchase for $800 and up.

BUT there is a new retail unit pump on the market that is approved for multi users AND it is cheaper thanthe best seller Medela. And it works great.

The brand is HYGEIA. The model is the Hygeia EnJOYE and they retail for around $200. They can be safelyresold when you are finished using them.

Here is what the manufacturer has to say about these pumps:The EnJoye™ Breastpump is a professional-grade electric/battery double pump that is designed for long-term and frequent pumping needs such as working mothers.
