Work Pumping Plan

breastfeeding at work

Having a work pumping plan can mean the difference in success and failure as far as breastfeeding is concerned. Work can be hectic and having a strategy ahead of time will help you succeed.

The goal is to mimic the babies natural feeding schedule to make 100% milk. If your goal is not 100% breast milk click here.

If your baby is feeding every 3 hours at home then guess how often you need to pump to maintain your supply? Every 3 hours, wow you are smart.

First of all make sure you have a great pump:

Here are some tips to make it work:
#1 Start and end your workday EMPTY

#2 Pump on time and for 10-15 minutes each breast

Lets say you have a 9-5 job: you wake up at 7am, get ready for work, feed the baby, take baby to daycare, commute to work and plan on getting to work 20 minutes early (figured into your commute, hence the pump PLAN) pump at work, as to start your workday EMPTY.
Here is an example of your typical workday:
0840arrive at work EARLY to pump for 15 minutes
noon lunch break : pump for 15 minutes
3pm pump for 10-15 minutes
5pm pump before leaving work OR nurse baby BEFORE leaving daycare. Why? If you wait until you get home that will more than likely be well past 3 hours when you figure in commute, errands, dinner, ect.

****And as you can see , in this example day, you only had to take 2 breaks to pump on the clock and actually one was during a lunch break and you should be getting an afternoon break as well, so no time "on the clock" needed to pump.
